The Montgomery County Board of Education recently accepted Superintendent Thomas Taylor’s recommended Capital Budget and six-year Capital Improvements Program (CIP), totaling $2.78 billion. The plan marks one of the district’s most significant facility initiatives in more than a decade and represents a major step toward modernizing aging MCPS buildings.
The CIP aims to address long-standing issues such as outdated heating and cooling systems, building deterioration, and infrastructure that no longer meets student needs. Planned upgrades include improvements to HVAC systems, roofing, fire safety, school security, technology, and outdoor learning spaces.
The proposal prioritizes 13 major construction and renovation projects, including replacements and expansions at multiple elementary, middle, and high schools. It also outlines improvements to central services, transportation infrastructure, and facilities supporting alternative education programs, all intended to create healthier, safer, and more effective learning environments.
While the Board’s decision moves the plan forward, final approvals and funding will require additional public hearings, work sessions, and coordination with county leadership in early 2026.
