As the holiday season approaches, many find themselves asking the yearly question: “How should I celebrate this Christmas?” With so many festive activities in Montgomery County, there are many opportunities for Gaithersburg High School students to celebrate the holidays as 2025 wraps up.
One of the most popular local traditions is the Winter Lights Festival at Seneca Creek State Park in Gaithersburg. This annual drive-through display features 3.5 miles of bold and shimmering decorations and more than 450 illuminated scenes and trees. Families can enjoy the show from the comfort of their cars, making it an easy and cozy holiday outing. The festival runs from November 28 to December 31 (closed on Christmas Day) and is open from 6:00–10:00 p.m. Arriving early with snacks, friends, and a hot cup of cocoa is highly recommended.
Another festive favorite is the Cut Your Own Christmas Tree event at Butler’s Orchard in Germantown. Families can harvest their own tree up to six feet tall for a price. The event runs on select dates: November 30, December 7, and December 14, with hours from 11:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. and 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Trees are limited, so reservations are required and early arrival is key.
Pre-cut trees are also available, and service animals are welcome, making it a cheerful and accessible holiday stop.
For those who prefer a more active holiday adventure, ice skating is a common winter tradition for all to enjoy, as the cold brings out warm coats and toasty beanies. So slip on your skating-rink shoes and prepare for slippery fun on ice at Rockville Town Square’s Outdoor Ice Skating Rink. Standard hours range from 10:00 a.m.–10:00 p.m. or 12:00 p.m.–10:00 p.m., though holiday schedules may vary. Skating tickets include up to two hours on the ice and parking. They do sell out fast, so be sure to register for tickets online to solidify your place.
With so many holiday experiences nearby, GHS students have no shortage of ways to celebrate the season. Whether you’re admiring glowing lights, picking the perfect tree, or gliding across the ice, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Have a snowtastic holiday!
